Lawrence Ignace

Through the eyes of different knowing.

I am a PhD candidate at the University of Victoria in the School of Environmental Studies. I have been walking in two worlds all my life and now within an academic setting. As Anishinaabe from Lac Des Mille Lacs First Nation within Treaty 3 in Northwestern Ontario, I hold a Masters in Public Administration with an emphasis on Natural Resources Policy from the University of Alaska Southeast. My relationship within the complex and ever connected world has been heavily influenced by my culture and mother that recently died at 77 years of age. She was an active trapper that loved the land and the lessons held within its life. I have been extremely fortunate to have held positions with Ontario Streams, Environment Canada, Assembly of First Nations, Health Canada, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, Carcross/Tagish First Nation, Arctic Institute of Community-Based Research and the Government of Yukon. These roles have taken me across Canada and around the world. My passion is for advancing the understanding and use of Indigenous Knowledge. My research focus is at the intersection of science and Indigenous knowledge and how we can learn from both worlds to shift our understanding.

The following is some of my art.
